Ingredients
Scale
Cookie Base
- 17.5 ounce sugar cookie mix
- ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
Frosting and Decoration
- 16 ounce tub white frosting
- 1–2 teaspoons water or milk (to thin frosting)
- 12 full-sized marshmallows, cut in half widthwise
- 7 ounce tube black cookie icing
- 7 ounce tube orange decorating icing
- 6.2 ounce (½ of 12.4 oz package) rainbow Twizzlers, sliced in half lengthwise
- 12 straight pretzel sticks, cut in half
- ½ cup mini M&Ms
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on your sugar cookie mix package (typically 375°F). Prepare a cookie sheet by lining it with parchment paper or lightly greasing it with cooking spray.
- Make the Cookie Dough: Combine the sugar cookie mix with softened salted butter and one large egg, leaving out any additional water called for unless necessary. The dough will be crumbly but should come together when squeezed.
- Form and Bake Cookies: Using a cookie scoop or spoon, form 1½-inch balls of dough. Place them 2 inches apart on the baking sheet. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or until the edges are set. Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
- Thin the White Frosting: Mix 1-2 teaspoons of water or milk into the white frosting tub until slightly runny but still thick enough not to drip down the sides of the cookies.
- Create the Melted Puddle Icing: Using a piping bag fitted with a small round tip, pipe a line around the outside of the cookie top to form a puddle outline. Fill in the outlined area with more of the thinned white frosting and smooth edges gently with a butter knife for a shiny, bright white melted snow puddle effect.
- Decorate Marshmallow Faces: Take each marshmallow half and use the black cookie icing to pipe on eyes and a mouth. Use the orange decorating icing to pipe a carrot-like nose on each face.
- Attach Marshmallows to Cookies: Dab some frosting under each marshmallow half to act as glue. Place the marshmallow on one side of the cookie, slightly touching but offset from the frosting puddle to create a melting effect.
- Add the Scarves: Wrap a sliced piece of Twizzler candy around the base of each marshmallow half to simulate a colorful scarf.
- Finish with Arms and Buttons: Press two half pretzel sticks into the sides of each cookie to form arms. Use mini M&Ms to create buttons on the cookie body, placing them off-center to enhance the melted snowman look.
- Allow to Set: Let the decorated cookies set at room temperature for about an hour before serving to allow the icing to firm up properly.
Notes
- Make sure the cookies are completely cool before decorating to prevent the frosting from melting.
- Adjust the consistency of the frosting carefully; too runny and it will drip off the cookies, too thick and it won’t spread nicely.
- Use a piping bag with a fine tip for detailed faces and icing outlines.
- These cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- For variation, try different colored Twizzlers for scarves to give each snowman a unique look.
