Low Calorie Bagels Recipe

  • Author: Aiden
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 bagels 1x
  • Diet: Low Calorie

Description

This recipe for Low Calorie Bagels offers a healthier take on traditional bagels by using non-fat Greek yogurt and minimal sugar. These bagels are simple to make, require just a few ingredients, and are baked to perfection for a slightly browned, soft, and satisfying bread option that’s perfect for breakfast or snacks.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 5 oz All purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp brown sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup Non fat Greek Yogurt (Fage)
  • 1 large egg (reserve a little for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Add Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sea salt, baking powder, and brown sugar to create the base for your dough.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: Add the non-fat Greek yogurt and beaten egg to the dry ingredients, reserving a small amount of egg to use later as an egg wash.
  3. Combine Dough: Stir all ingredients together well until a dough forms.
  4. Knead Dough: Transfer the dough to a well-floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes until smooth. Alternatively, you can use an electric mixer with a dough hook for this step.
  5. Divide Dough: Cut the dough into 4 equal pieces.
  6. Shape Cylinders: Roll each piece into a cylinder shape.
  7. Form Bagels: Shape each cylinder into a bagel by connecting the ends, forming a ring.
  8. Prepare to Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper and place the bagels on it.
  9. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the bagels lightly with the reserved beaten egg to give them a shiny, golden crust.
  10. Bake Bagels: Place the baking sheet on the highest rack in the oven and bake the bagels for 20-25 minutes until they are slightly browned on top.

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, you can bake a pan of water in the oven to create steam while baking.
  • Make sure to knead the dough well to develop gluten and improve texture.
  • If you prefer a sweeter bagel, increase the brown sugar slightly.
  • Store leftover bagels in an airtight container and consume within 2 days for best freshness.
