Hibachi Steak Bowls Recipe

Introduction

Hibachi Steak Bowls are a delicious and satisfying meal inspired by the flavors of Japanese teppanyaki. Tender marinated steak, sautéed vegetables, and fried rice come together with savory sauces to create a colorful, restaurant-style dish you can easily make at home.

A white bowl contains a colorful meal with three main parts: on the left, dark brown grilled beef cubes topped with a light cream sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds and green onion pieces; below the beef, sautéed vegetables including orange carrot slices, green zucchini, and brown mushrooms, also drizzled with the same cream sauce; on the right side, a generous portion of light brown fried rice with small orange and green vegetable bits, garnished with chopped green onions. A small dish of creamy orange dipping sauce sits on top of the rice, and a pair of dark wooden chopsticks rest across the bowl. The background shows a white marbled texture. Ingredients

  • 2 lbs top sirloin steak, cut into rough chunks
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 6 cloves of garlic, finely minced or pressed
  • 2 teaspoons ginger paste
  • 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon sesame oil, divided
  • ½ teaspoon ground white pepper (or black pepper)
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 3 medium carrots, thinly cut on a bias
  • 2 medium zucchinis, sliced in half lengthwise & then cut into half moons
  • 4-5 ounces sliced mushrooms (baby bella recommended)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1-2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce or Japanese BBQ sauce
  • For serving: Fried rice & store-bought Yum Yum Sauce

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Place the sirloin steak into a large bowl or plastic bag. Add mirin, garlic, ginger paste, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, ground white or black pepper, and kosher salt to taste. Toss well to coat all the steak pieces evenly. Set aside and marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Step 2: Heat 2 tablespoons butter and 1 tablespoon sesame oil in a wok or large skillet over medium heat. Add the carrots, zucchini, and mushrooms. Sauté, tossing frequently, until the vegetables are tender and golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Transfer cooked vegetables to a plate, and wipe the pan clean if needed.
  3. Step 3: In the same pan, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and 1 tablespoon sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the marinated steak and cook, tossing often, until nicely seared but still tender, about 3 to 4 minutes. Avoid overcooking to prevent toughness.
  4. Step 4: Remove the pan from heat, drizzle the teriyaki or Japanese BBQ sauce over the steak, and toss to coat until the steak chunks are glistening with sauce.
  5. Step 5: Assemble the bowls by dividing the cooked steak, sautéed vegetables, and fried rice evenly into serving bowls. Drizzle with Yum Yum Sauce or serve it alongside for dipping. Serve immediately and enjoy your hibachi steak bowls!

Tips & Variations

  • Use a cast iron skillet for a better sear on the steak and more authentic hibachi flavor.
  • Swap teriyaki sauce for a gluten-free soy sauce blend if dietary restrictions require it.
  • Add other vegetables like bell peppers or snap peas for extra crunch and color.
  • For a spicier kick, mix some sriracha into the Yum Yum Sauce before drizzling.

Storage

Store leftover hibachi steak bowls in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm gently in a skillet over medium heat or in the microwave until heated through. Avoid overheating the steak to prevent it from becoming tough.

How to Serve

A white bowl holds a colorful meal with three main sections: on the left, dark brown grilled beef cubes topped with white sesame seeds and small green herb pieces; on the right, a mound of light brown fried rice mixed with small bits of orange carrot and green scallions; at the bottom, a mix of sautéed vegetables including orange carrot slices, green zucchini, and light brown mushrooms, all lightly drizzled with a creamy beige sauce. In the center top of the bowl is a small round container filled with smooth, creamy orange dipping sauce with black pepper sprinkled on top. Two brown wooden chopsticks rest diagonally across the bowl. The bowl sits on a white marbled surface next to a small bowl of sesame seeds and a bottle of sauce. photo taken with an iphone --ar 4:5 --v 7

  1. Prep & marinate steak: Place the sirloin chunks in a large bowl or plastic bag. Add mirin, minced garlic, ginger paste, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, ground white (or black) pepper, and kosher salt to taste. Toss thoroughly to coat all steak pieces evenly. Let the steak marinate for at least 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  2. Sauté veggies: Heat 2 tablespoons butter and 1 tablespoon sesame oil in a wok or large skillet over medium heat. Add the carrots, zucchini, and mushrooms. Cook, tossing frequently, until vegetables are tender and golden brown, roughly 10-15 minutes. Season with garlic powder and salt and pepper to taste. Transfer the cooked vegetables to a clean plate.
