Description

Churro Saltine Toffee is a delightful twist on classic toffee, featuring a crispy saltine cracker base topped with a rich brown sugar and butter caramel, melted white chocolate, and a cinnamon-sugar sprinkle for a sweet and salty treat reminiscent of churros.

Ingredients

Scale

Cracker Base

  • 40 Saltine Crackers

Caramel Topping

  • 1 cup Salted Butter
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar

Cinnamon Sugar

  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon

Chocolate Topping

  • 2 cups Ghirardelli White Chocolate Chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set the oven temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the toffee.
  2. Prepare the baking sheet: Line a 10 x 15-inch baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  3. Arrange the crackers: Lay out the 40 saltine crackers in a single layer covering the entire baking sheet.
  4. Make the caramel: In a saucepan, combine the salted butter and brown sugar. Stir frequently and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, continue stirring constantly and boil for an additional 5 minutes to create a thick caramel.
  5. Pour caramel over crackers: Pour the hot caramel evenly over the arranged saltine crackers and spread it out to cover them completely.
  6. Bake the crackers: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes to allow the caramel to set into the crackers.
  7. Adjust crackers: Remove the pan from the oven and let it sit for a minute or two until the crackers have settled. Use a butter knife to gently push any overlapping crackers back into place.
  8. Add white chocolate: Immediately sprinkle the white chocolate chips over the hot caramel. Let them sit for a few minutes until the chocolate melts, then spread the melted white chocolate evenly over the salted toffee layer.
  9. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar: Evenly sprinkle the cinnamon and sugar mixture over the melted white chocolate to add the characteristic churro flavor.
  10. Serve: Once set and cooled, cut or break the toffee into pieces and serve.

Notes

  • Use salted butter to complement the salty-sweet contrast; if using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt.
  • Ensure continuous stirring during caramel boiling to prevent burning.
  • Allow the white chocolate chips to melt completely before spreading for a smooth finish.
  • Store leftover toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free butter and white chocolate alternatives.
