Description
These Chocolate Cake Mix Donuts are a quick and easy treat made from a boxed cake mix, perfect for a homemade dessert or snack. You can bake them in the oven or use an electric mini doughnut maker. Once baked, they’re topped with chocolate frosting and fun sprinkles or a simple vanilla glaze for a deliciously indulgent finish.
Ingredients
Scale
Donut Batter
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (15.25 ounces, or your favorite flavor)
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 3/4 cup milk
Toppings
- 1 container chocolate frosting
- Assorted fun sprinkles, for decoration
Vanilla Glaze (Optional)
- 1 cup confectioners sugar
- 1–2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease donut pans with non-stick cooking spray if baking. Alternatively, preheat your electric mini donut maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Mix Batter: In a mixing bowl, beat together the cake mix, egg, melted butter, and milk until fully combined and smooth.
- Pipe Batter: Transfer the batter into a large piping bag or resealable plastic bag. Pipe the batter evenly into the donut pans or donut maker wells, being careful not to overfill.
- Bake or Cook Donuts: For oven method, bake the donuts for 15 to 18 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. For the electric mini donut maker, cook the donuts for 7-8 minutes until cooked through.
- Cool Donuts: If baked in the oven, allow donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then invert pan onto a wire rack and cool completely. If made in the donut maker, transfer donuts to a wire rack to cool.
- Prepare Frosting: For store-bought frosting, heat frosting in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute until slightly runny. For vanilla glaze, combine powdered sugar and milk in a bowl, stirring until smooth with a runny consistency.
- Decorate Donuts: Drizzle melted chocolate frosting over donuts and garnish with sprinkles or chocolate chips. Or dip donuts into the vanilla glaze and set on racks to decorate.
Notes
- You can substitute the chocolate cake mix with any flavor you prefer.
- Use a piping bag for neat and even filling of the donut molds.
- Donuts should be completely cool before frosting to prevent melting.
- The vanilla glaze can be adjusted in thickness by adding more or less milk.
- Store leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
