Description

This Cherry Danish recipe features flaky crescent roll dough filled with a smooth almond cream cheese mixture and topped with sweet cherry pie filling. Baked to golden perfection and finished with a classic powdered sugar glaze and optional slivered almonds, these delightful pastries are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Cream Cheese Filling

  • 5 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

Cherry Danish

  • 21 ounces cherry pie filling
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 16 ounces flaky crescent rolls (two 8-ounce tubes, chilled in freezer for 30 minutes)
  • ¼ cup slivered almonds (optional)

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
  2. Prepare Cream Cheese Filling: In a medium bowl, use a handheld electric mixer on medium-high speed to cream together the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and almond extract until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Set aside.
  3. Make Egg Wash: In a small bowl, beat together the egg and water with a fork until fully combined. This will be used to brush the dough edges for a golden finish.
  4. Prepare Crescent Roll Dough: Open one package of crescent rolls. Keep the rolls in their original tube shape and place them on a cutting board without unrolling the dough.
  5. Cut Dough: Using a sharp knife, slice the long cylinder into 12 equal pieces.
  6. Form and Brush Dough Circles: With your fingers and thumb, gently flatten the center of each dough circle. Place each circle on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Use a pastry brush to paint the edges and sides of each dough circle with the prepared egg wash.
  7. Add Filling: Spoon a small amount of the cream cheese mixture into the center of each dough circle.
  8. Top with Cherries: Place 2 cherries on top of the cream cheese filling in each Danish.
  9. Bake: Bake the Danishes in the preheated oven for 10 to 11 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown. Once baked, allow them to cool for 5 minutes.
  10. Prepare Glaze and Drizzle: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and whole milk until smooth and lump-free. Lightly drizzle this glaze over each cooled Danish. Optionally, garnish with slivered almonds for added texture and flavor.
  11. Repeat with Second Package: Open the second tube of crescent rolls and repeat steps 4 through 10 to make the remaining Danishes.

Notes

  • Do not unroll the crescent dough; keep it in tube form for easy slicing into circles.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is fully softened for a smooth filling.
  • Chilling the crescent rolls helps maintain dough structure when cutting and baking.
  • You can substitute cherry pie filling with other fruit fillings for variety.
  • Slivered almonds are optional but add a nice crunch and visual appeal.
  • Allow the Danishes to cool slightly before glazing to prevent the glaze from melting off.
