Cake Truffles Recipe

  • Author: Aiden
  • Total Time: 2 hours 5 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 30 cake truffles 1x

Description

Delicious and easy-to-make Cake Truffles combine moist cake crumbs with creamy frosting, dipped in smooth candy melts and decorated with sprinkles. Perfect bite-sized treats for parties or whenever you crave a sweet indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale

Cake Base

  • 1 box cake mix (any flavor)
  • Eggs (as called for on cake mix box)
  • Oil (as called for on cake mix box)
  • Water (as called for on cake mix box)

Frosting

  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons canned frosting

Coating and Decoration

  • 1 pound candy melts (recommend Ghirardelli Melting Wafers)
  • 1/2 cup sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Preheat your oven and prepare the cake mix according to the instructions on the box using the specified amounts of eggs, oil, and water. Pour the batter into a 9”x13” pan and bake as directed until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  2. Cool and Crumble: Allow the cake to cool completely outside the pan. Once cooled, break it apart and use your hands or a fork to crumble the cake into fine crumbs.
  3. Mix with Frosting: Transfer the cake crumbs to a bowl, then stir in the frosting until the mixture forms a dough-like consistency. If the mixture feels too dry, add more frosting 1 tablespoon at a time until it holds together well.
  4. Shape Cake Balls: Roll the cake-frosting mixture into tablespoon-sized balls. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and refrigerate for at least one hour to firm up.
  5. Melt the Candy Coating: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the candy melts in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each until smooth and fully melted.
  6. Dip Truffles: Using a fork to hold each cake ball, spoon the melted candy melts over it to fully coat. Gently tap the fork against the bowl’s edge to remove excess coating.
  7. Add Sprinkles and Set: Place the freshly dipped truffles onto a parchment-lined sheet pan. Immediately sprinkle with your choice of sprinkles before the coating sets.
  8. Repeat and Chill: Continue dipping and decorating the remaining truffles. Once all are coated, store them in the refrigerator until firm and ready to serve. They can be made up to 3 days in advance.

Notes

  • The cake flavor can be customized with any boxed mix you prefer.
  • If dough is too sticky to roll, chill it longer before shaping.
  • Use good-quality candy melts for smoother coating and better flavor.
  • Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and easy cleanup.
  • Store truffles refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
