Description

These Banana Donut Holes are a delightful and healthier twist on traditional donuts, made with ripe bananas, self-rising flour, and coconut oil. Air-fried to golden perfection, they offer a soft, moist interior with a slightly crisp exterior, coated with a sweet cinnamon sugar glaze that makes them irresistible. This recipe is quick, simple, and perfect for a guilt-free treat or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Banana Donut Holes

  • 1/2 cup Banana (about 1 large banana)
  • 3/4 cup Self-Rising Flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup Unrefined Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil (melted, or melted vegan butter)
  • 23 teaspoons Melted Coconut Oil (for oiling and brushing)
  • Avocado Oil spray (for air fryer basket and topping)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Banana Puree: Mash one large banana until it reaches a smooth puree consistency, ensuring you have about 1/2 cup to maintain the proper dough texture.
  2. Form the Dough: Add 3/4 cup self-rising flour to the banana puree and stir with a rubber spatula until lumps form. Oil your hands with melted coconut oil and knead the mixture gently to create a sticky, moist dough ball. Avoid adding too much flour; use up to 2-3 tablespoons more if necessary to prevent the dough from becoming too wet or bready.
  3. Shape the Donut Holes: Grease your hands with melted coconut oil, take about a tablespoon of dough, and roll it into a ball. Place each ball on a parchment-lined plate. Continue until all dough is formed into balls. Spray the donut holes lightly with avocado oil to help with browning.
  4. Prepare the Air Fryer: Spray the air fryer basket with avocado oil to prevent sticking. Place the donut holes in the basket about 1 inch (3 cm) apart to allow expansion during cooking.
  5. Air Fry: Air fry the donut holes at 350°F (180°C) for 6-7 minutes until they are puffy, golden brown, and somewhat dry on the outside. They may have an irregular, rock-like shape which is normal for this recipe.
  6. Coat with Cinnamon Sugar: While warm, brush each donut hole generously with melted coconut oil using a pastry brush. Then roll them evenly in cinnamon sugar to give them that classic donut flavor and sweetness.
  7. Serve: Serve the banana donut holes warm immediately for the best texture and flavor enjoyment.

Notes

  • If the dough feels too sticky, avoid adding too much flour as it can make the donut holes dense; instead, keep your hands oiled to handle the dough easier.
  • Using self-rising flour eliminates the need for baking powder or soda in this quick recipe.
  • The irregular shape of donut holes is expected; aim for uniform size by measuring dough tablespoons consistently.
  • Avocado oil spray works well for air frying due to its high smoke point and neutral flavor.
  • These donut holes are best eaten fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days and warmed before serving.
